The Parish of Our Lady Help of Christians, Luton was one of many parishes which supported CAFOD’s Harvest fast day in October.
Edewede supported CAFOD in her parish as a Parish volunteer for the first time this Harvest and reflects on her experience of it :
“I attended the Supporter day in September and a meeting with other volunteers in my pastoral area in Luton. This equipped me with knowledge and ideas as well as giving me the support and inspiration I needed to promote Harvest Fast day in a new way in my parish.
I spoke to my parish priest in advance and was delighted that he was supportive of my ideas to promote CAFOD differently this year. We had an announcement in the parish newsletter announcing the forthcoming Fast Day and the CAFOD poster was placed on a free-standing notice board in the Church Porch so that Parishioners coming in or leaving the Church could see it.
CAFOD Fast Day envelopes were handed out on the 2 October while more were stapled to the newsletter the following week so that parishioners all had it.
We prayed specifically for CAFOD’s work during our Prayers of the Faithful.
As encouraged at the supporters’ day, I tried to get others involved too. I was thrilled when enthusiastic volunteers Rosemary and Jeanette agreed to give the Fast Day talk before the end of all masses. This was great as we do not usually have the CAFOD talk and people heard how their help could transform.
The collection was over £1000 which was a significant increase on the previous year’s donation! I am delighted! ”
Thanks to Edewede and Our Lady Help of Christians parish for all their support. Great work! Thanks also to all the parishes, schools and individuals who have supported Harvest Fast day. We couldn’t do our great work without your support!
