A motley crew set off under dull skies from St Mary’s Dunstable, by way of the Downs to Leighton Buzzard on the second leg of the CAFOD One World Campaign sponsored walk. Led by Alban of Biggleswade, who organised the whole event, our group included mother and son combo Suzanna and Danny of St Mary’s; John, Tessa, Mary and me from Sacred Heart, Leighton Buzzard, Jeanette from Sandy, Ian, Hazel and Stephanie.
After a bit of dithering we took the direct route down the Dunstable Downs (it’s not called “Downs” for nothing). I required two walking sticks to slow my progress and prevent gravity from having its evil way with me! After that things were pretty level. Almost the entire walk was along footpaths and bridleways, and with the sun coming out things were very pleasant.
You get into little chats with people as you walk along: Jeanette was no beginner when it came to walking: the Camino in Spain, a walk from Sandy to Winchester, and completing a London Marathon were among her accomplishments. I kept very quiet!
We stopped off for lunch at the Carpenter’s Arms in Slapton, and were joined by Dominic, Katy and Eileen for the last leg. Members of the Sacred Heart Justice and Peace Group were ready to greet us with tea/coffee and homemade cakes and biscuits in Sacred Heart Parish Hall. I sidled off to change my footwear, and returned for a short thanksgiving liturgy.
Thank you to all those who took part and donated.
