I recently spent two weeks in the southern region of Bangladesh visiting CAFOD partners and meeting families and communities benefitting from CAFOD’s work.
During our stay, we visited families that had been made homeless by Cyclone Sidr in 2007 and had lost their land, animals and livelihood in the flooding.
We saw fields that once grew plentiful crops – enough to provide for the family and to make a small living – now dry and fallow, caused partly by the lack of rainfall and decreasing river flow but exacerbated by land destroyed by a rich and powerful few. I spoke to one family who, all too aware of the impact of climate change, are ensuring that they do there bit for the environment by planting trees – this was truly humbling and really brought it home to me: This is our problem, all of us together – we need to care for this earth – after all, we have just one world.
